God works in our lives through both discipline and humbling. His discipline corrects our actions like a loving father, while humbling—as seen in Saul's prophesying—strips away our pride and reminds us of our proper place before Him. Both are acts of divine love offering us the path to repentance and restoration."

Past Proves Faithful:
Just as God has seen me through past triumphs, I trust He'll guide me now. My memories of His faithfulness then give me confidence He'll be faithful today. Like David with his lions and bears, I've seen God show up before and know He'll show up again.

God desires us to obey above all else. In the past, I have taken what God has given me and have distorted it either to make others happy or to make myself feel better. It never ends well and robs God of his goodness for me.

The difference between Jonathan and Saul in this chapter is active faith. Jonathan actively sought God's presence and direction rather than remaining passive. I want to make sure I always seek God first before taking action in my life. Not as an excuse to be passive but to confidently move forward in faith.

Trusting Divine Timing - 1 Samuel 13:9 - Day #138

Rather than waiting, Saul took matters into his own hands. His impatience led him to disobey God's command by offering the sacrifice himself instead of waiting for Samuel. I struggle with patience and when I am struggling with it, I look for shortcuts. I trust in my own strength and understanding instead of seeking Christ first. If I want God's hand over my endeavors, I need to slow down and trust in his timing. When I make mistakes, I repent, rather than attempt to justify my choices.

Spiritual Accountability - 1 Samuel 12:20-22 - Day #137

I desire to have wise counsel in my life - people who truly know me and my capabilities, who can lovingly point out when I'm drifting from the Lord and encourage me to draw near to Him again. I want to serve others in this same way. Lord, bring wise mentors into my life and keep me humble enough to receive their guidance. Also, bring others into my path whom I can support and speak truth to in return.

Righteous vs. Selfish - 1 Samuel 11:5-6 - Day #136

A good example of righteous anger. It's often that my anger comes from a place of selfish frustration showing that my desires of how things should be are out of alignment with how God would have them.
God, search my heart, reveal selfish motives, and give me your perspective on situations so I can respond righteously.

When people who previously knew me see me now, do they see someone whose life has been transformed? Someone who used to have different interests and priorities? Someone who used to speak and act differently? Does who they see now lead them to ask what has come over me that I am so different than I was before I decided to follow Christ? God often works through ordinary circumstances to accomplish His purposes. It's easy to think that God can't use us in big ways but if we are open and receptive to his will and purpose, anything can happen.

I can't love God and the distractions that I've brought into my life. As long as I give distractions a stronghold the longer I will be oppressed by them. Putting them aside makes room in my heart and my mind for service to the Lord and deliverance from sin.

Why was Israel defeated?

They failed to recognize their own sin, they used the Ark of the covenant as a good luck charm putting their trust in it as a physical object rather than trusting in God himself.

Reflection:

How easy it is for our faith to end up in the seen rather than the unseen God. This tendency to rely on the visible and tangible can lead us astray, just as it did for the Israelites when they placed their trust in the Ark of the Covenant rather than in God Himself.

This chapter had me thinking about my own daughters and how as their father, I desire to provide a safe environment for them to live in, offer guidance and direction as I see a need for it, make sure they feel like they are a part of this family, teach them the value of work, and model kindness and respectfulness for them so that they desire these traits in a husband when they become adults.

Faithful Influence - Ruth 1:16 - Day #122

I pray that the way I care for others draws them closer to the Lord. Though I am not a perfect example of love and sacrifice I will strive to always point myself back to the Lord in hope that others will choose to do the same.

Day #121 - No King - Judges 21:25

When God isn’t King over my life I am making rash decisions and justifications to get what I want. Reading His word is a priority because I desire to hear from him. His word guides and corrects my heart. Praying through his word and my thoughts helps realign me with Christ.

Day #120 - Confession before action - Judges 20:26

After going into battle alone and suffering loss after loss Israel finally came to the Lord for help. Their fasting and various offerings was a confession of their sin. How often it is that I try to fight my own battles when confession is the answer.

Day #119 - Ripple Effects of Sin - Judges 19:1

The initial sins committed in this story escalated into increasingly horrific acts, impacting numerous lives. This serves as a reminder that our personal choices can have far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the immediate need we seek to fill.

Day #118 - Misguided Influence - Judges 18:14

How important it is to surround yourself with people who point you to the Lord and that those people are aligned with the Lord themselves. The five men desired what Micah had and prioritized self-interest and idolatry over obedience to God’s commandments. Their desires lead them to influence their people to steal the false gods and idols and they would worship them for generations.

Day #117 - Religious compromise - Judges 17:6

When I am not aligned with Christ it’s easy for me to justify things I normally wouldn’t. I start compromising in different areas of my life. I start seeking out other things and placing them where God should be. My actions and attitude start effecting those around me. I must keep my eyes on Christ and cling near to him at all times, especially when I’m feeling comfortable.

Day #116 - Our Compromise, His Mercy - Judges 16:28

How great is God’s mercy that even after we compromise ourselves over and over again that he is willing to accept us back into his arms to strengthen and restore us? Lord help me stay true to my convictions and flee from the temptations that lead to overconfidence in my own abilities.

Day #115 - God’s strength, not mine - Judges 15:18-19

I often expect the Lord to fulfill my needs after I went about it on my own. May I remain humble and seek the Lord in all things big or small.

Day #114 - Guarding Against Compromise Judges 14:8-9

Just like Samson broke his Nazarite vow, I often break promises I make to God and myself to avoid things that aren’t good for me or might lead to sin. But I know that God’s power is greater than my choices.

I want a faith so strong that whenever I encounter any challenges or opportunities, I turn to the Lord for guidance and wisdom before making any decisions or taking actions.

Day #112 - Avoid Pride & Conflict - Judges 12:3

Lord protect me from prideful thinking. Help me to be cautious with my words and understand others so that I can show them your love.

Day #111 - Reckless Vows - Judges 11:30-31

How often I make reckless vows to the Lord as if I have something of value to manipulate him with. Lord help my unbelief and lack of trust in your faithfulness in my life.

Day #110 - Moved by our repentance - Judges 10:15-16

I desire quick correction from the Lord because I know that he does not delight in my suffering but is moved by my repentance. God is always willing to restore.

Day #109 - Purpose Above Power - Judges 9:11

I’ll stay true to my purpose, using my talents to help others with humility and honesty. I won’t trade the joy and success of my calling for the short-term rush of power or authority. I know that real happiness comes from following God’s plan.

Day #108 - Stay Humble - Judges 8:27

This is a reminder to remain aligned with the Lord so that any success I have points back to him and not what I have built.

Day #107 - His glory, not mine - Judges 7:2

Am I positioning myself so that I get the glory or God? Do I wait for everything to align or do I move forward and trust that the Lord has me here for a reason? In what areas of my life am I “prepared enough” to move forward trusting that God will see me through it?

Day #106 - God will be with me - Judges 6:15-16

God will never ask me to do something without first equipping me. It may be with everything I need to succeed, or the ability to learn. The important lesson is to trust God and take action.

Day #105 - Praising God for his faithfulness - Judges 5:3

I will worship in thankfulness, especially in times of victory or answered prayer. I will step up and take responsibility for what God has put before me always keeping my eye on the Lord. I will protect and provide for my family both physically and spiritually. I will help cultivate courage and faith in my children by being a positive influence in their lives.

Day #104 - God's timing, not mine - Judges 4:14

I trust in God’s timing, especially during uncertainty, and will keep ready so that I can carry out his will when the time is right.

Day #103 - Ultimate Deliverer - Judges 3:9

Lord, thank you for always providing a way. Thank you for your son Jesus Christ, the ultimate deliverer. Help me to stay on the narrow path.

Day #102 - Tear down the altars - Judges 2:2-3

Lord I have kept up alters which have been nothing but a thorn and a snare. Please help me tear them down completely and replace them with your loving kindness.

Day #101 - Drive out sin - Judges 1:28
