Professor Carri Westgarth is the Chair in Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Liverpool. She is a leading authority who supervises PhD research on all aspects of companion animal welfare and anthrozoology. Her own PhD, conducted within the Liverpool Veterinary Epidemiology Group, specifically explored the complexities of contact between dogs and people.

It's time to get comfy, pop the kettle on, slip those nice socks you like on and open your ears, minds and hearts! This episode was a real treat because we (finally) got to chat with the brilliant Daniel Shaw from Animal Behaviour Kent, and ooooh boy, did we cover some fascinating ground! 

We talk about Daniels super interesting journey into the world of dog behaviour and training and why understanding the brain side of things (yep, we're talking neuroscience) not only rings his bell but is absolutely key to effective training.

This means that every fortnight we can't contain our excitement when we know release day is incoming. SO.... Without further ado we bring you yet another wonderful human working in the dog profession Clara Hewson!

For those of you who aren't yet familiar with The Muzzle Movement we can't wait to share Clara's story with you. It is very important though that we state in all honesty that Clara (and her amazing team) aren't just make muzzles, they're building a movement! It was a genuinely inspirational chat that left Nat and Steve feeling enthused. We cover LOADS, Clara gets down to business talking about bringing her muzzle idea to life! A bit of stray off our, well-trodden, dog training and behaviour path today. We invited the wonderful Professor Alex Conner (co-author of ADHD Unpacked and co-host of the ADHD Adults Podcast) onto the podcast. For a while now we’ve been planning on having a conversation that advocates for compassion and understanding in what it must be like for neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with ADHD diagnosis, navigating a neurotypical world. 

We also thought it might be helpful to understand how ADHD might impact both trainers and people who might be attending classes or 121’s. What unfolded was a fascinating conversation that enabled us to delve into the complexities of ADHD, discussing its impact on communication and relationships, emphasizing the importance of understanding and supporting one another within our relationships and communities.

We get to explore the intricate relationship between dog training and ADHD, delve into the parallels in understanding behaviour, the importance of environment and the need for emotional acceptance. We find out how dog body language can inform our understanding of ADHD, the impact of genetics versus environment, and the challenges faced by individuals with ADHD in various settings. 

Alex effortlessly and expertly addresses misconceptions about ADHD and the societal perceptions that contribute to a stigmas. We hear how things people might take for granted, like the setting of boundaries and self-care, can be unique challenges faced by individuals with ADHD. We explore how personal experiences shape their understanding of self-worth and the importance of community support. As the temperatures are rising in the UK and spring has truly sprung we thought it would be a great time to spring clean our noggins about all things dog businesses. We are thrilled this week to bring you a talk with the wonderful Gretta Ford. Not only is Gretta a member of PACT, an ABTC Registered Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB), a full member of the APBC and FABC (which is pretty darn impressive) but Gretta is also a business strategist for trainers and behaviourists! We’re thrilled to bring you another one of our awesome DOGX 2025 speakers today… drumroll please… It’s Roz Pooley! We had a ball chatting with Roz and got into a LOT! From sharing her journey from a retail background to becoming a prominent figure in dog training and behaviour, her experiences in dog walking, the evolution of training methods, and the importance of understanding dog behaviour and social dynamics. We also discuss the significance of continuous learning and adapting to the changing landscape of dog training, while also getting Roz’s perspective on the unique roles that different dogs play within their social groups. We also couldn’t chat with Roz without discussing the overwhelming influence of social media on guardians and the pressure of perfection in dog training and the unrealistic expectations placed on trainers and their dogs. We wax lyrical about a world where a more realistic and empathetic approach to dog training that embraces imperfection and prioritizes the well-being of both dogs AND  their owners might exist. We are coming to you a few days late this week as the team is currently knee dee in Crufts shenanigans. If anyone of you are visiting Crufts this year do pop by and see us at Hall 3 stand 117 as we'd love to meet some podcast listeners!

Todays offering has been a long time coming. As many of know PACT are a member organisation of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC). We set up a special podcast to speak to Hanne Grice and Jane Williams so they could tell you folks all about the ABTC. We took a whole bunch of Bookshelver questions and amalgamated them to ask Hanne and Jane. We had a blast exploring its structure, purpose, and the importance of being a registered practitioner. We talk about the rigorous assessment processes, the need for regulation in the industry, and our (and others) community's role in supporting that mission. Hanne and Jane also talk about the importance of ethical training and the ongoing efforts to improve standards within the animal behaviour and training sector. We tried our best to get all questions answered but we did have time constraints that meant we couldn't get to them all. We'll just have to invite them back :) You'll get the idea of just how passionate we all are about the importance of open communication and ethical considerations in our industry.

This was a jam packed show where we left no stone unturned. “Dogs are living up to twice as long as they did 40 years ago which has implications for ageing dogs’ healthcare and wellbeing. As the life expectancy of canine golden oldies increases, so does the amount of time our dogs spend in poor health, but it may be difficult for us to distinguish between normal age-related changes and serious diseases that require veterinary treatment. To help address this, BSAVA PetSavers funded a major research project at the University of Liverpool – Old Age Pets – to help vets and owners provide the best care for their senior and geriatric dogs.”

We were thrilled to talk with the amazing  Lisa Wallis and Carri Westgarth about their fascinating research on aging in dogs at what their research found. We touch on cognitive development, owner and veterinary perceptions, and how the practical applications of their research led to the creation of an exciting practical resource called the Aging Canine Toolkit. Lisa and Carri share fascinating insights from their experiences researching this topic we all discuss the need for more open conversations about aging and how best to care for our dogs in their twilight years.

Well let me tell you what's been occurring here at Barks HQ for the last few weeks... Steve and Corrin have been buzzing about their interview with the amazing Jenifer A. Zeligs Ph.D. and are so happy to get it out in the world. As many of you know Steve has been on a philisophical mission to get to the bottom of what the "art" is in Dog Training. Ever since learning about Jenifer and reading her book "Mindful Partners" we've been dying to talk to her and this week those dreams came true. This book had a profound affect on Steve and has actually refocused his thoughts on how to approach Dog training over the last year so, it was an absolute pleasure to talk to Jenifer and explore her journey in animal training. The discussion highlights the "Art" of training, the influence of Buddhism, and practical applications for all trainers. We explore how she successfully married the integration of mindfulness and psychological principles within the book. We chat about the complexities of behaviour, the importance of building trust and relationships with animals, and the role of reinforcement in training. Jenifer also shares insights on managing fear in animals, the significance of empathy, and the concept of the relationship bank account in fostering positive interactions. Putting HUGE weight on the importance of understanding animal perspectives, the power of mindfulness, and the role of choice as a motivator. Zeligs highlights the significance of prevention in training, the art of balancing science and intuition, and the necessity of effective communication through body language. Jenifer's Online Animal Training 101 Course

The dust has now settled after another fabulous DOGX and with Nat away on her holidays and corrin run off her feet it falls to Steve to host this episode SOLO (what could go wrong?). Luckily Nat and Corrin were around when we interviewed the wonderful, awesome, trail blazing human that is Gwen Bailey about her book The Perfect Puppy. We discuss her journey in dog training, the evolution of her book 'The Perfect Puppy', and the changes in training techniques over the years. She reflects on her experiences in kennels, the importance of communication with dog owners, and the impact of her work on the dog training landscape. Gwen Facts:

Gwen worked for a leading UK national animal welfare charity from 1988-2002 and pioneered the use of dog behaviour knowledge in the rehoming of unwanted animals. 

She was the first person to be appointed by a national animal welfare charity as a full time Animal Behaviourist, eventually heading a team of behaviourists.

Gwen has successfully solved behaviour problems in thousands of rehomed dogs, helping to prevent dogs with behavioural problems being passed from home to home and improving the rehoming success rate.

Gwen has lectured at national and international conferences, run training courses for staff at animal charities around the world and has written many books & education leaflets. She is a past Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and a past Trustee for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

In 2003, Gwen founded and now runs Puppy School, a large network of professionally-trained puppy tutors which is a Practitioner Member of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. Puppy School tutors have collectively helped to have a positive training impact on more than 100,000 puppies and their owners, and continue to run excellent classes around the country.

Well this week Corrin, Nat and Steve talk to the wonderful Sally Bradbury who has been a mentor and inspiration for all of us. Sally has had a really interesting career as a dog professional and has co-authored TWO books about dog training (one with Steve). We talk about her start in the world of dogs, the start of the amazing Facebook group Dog Training Advice and Support, Jack & Billy - Puppy Tales and  Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions: The stress-free way to live in harmony with your dog. We also take various trips down memory lane to when we all worked together. Enjoy!

Sally Facts:

Sally Bradbury has worked with dogs all her adult life from RSPCA kennel maid in her teens to founding and running her own very successful dog training business for 20 years. She was a founder member of the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) 

Over the years she has given a loving home to many dogs that didn't get the best start in life. Her passion is helping and supporting new puppy owners on raising their puppy to avoid the many pitfalls that results in so many youngsters being handed into rescues in their first year.

She is now retired and living in Wales with her husband and numerous Border Collies.

What a corker of an episode we have for you today! Yet another returning guest here at Barks HQ today as we talk to the award winning scientist and all round brilliant human being, the one and only, Marc Bekoff about his wonderful book The Emotional Lives of Animals. 

Marc has recently revised this ground breaking book (first released in 2007) and we thought it would be a great opportunity to catch up and talk about it. Marc's predictions that, after the books initial release, our understanding of animal cognition and emotion would grow “richer, more accurate, and possibly different,” has certainly come true with an explosion of research that has warranted this revision and super charged what was already a "must own" book in the stratosphere of bookshelf must haves.

Full of engrossing animal stories of empathy, joy, grief, anger, embarrassment and love we defy anyone reading it to leave this book without a new found and concrete understanding of the depths of non human animals lived experiences. As we know, with knowledge also comes responsibility and this book shines a big bright light on how we should use this knowledge to inform how humans can go forward and change how we care for and treat the animals we share our lives with. A midweek podcast extra!? What’s going on? Well…we’re going off piste a little today but with good reason. 

Many of you may know that there is a lot of division within the dog training industry (what’s new we hear you cry). Lately there has been a call for unity and a call for people with different training styles, ethics and core beliefs to come together and talk it out for the good of the dogs and humans. Here at PACT headquarters we thought we would record an episode talking through some of key points that are being debated and, more importantly, what we think about the question of unity and whether or not, we feel having these conversations/debates is useful. 

We decided to predominantly record this for our PACT members and, of course, for anyone else that is listening that is a professional in the dog training industry, has an interest in becoming a dog trainer in the future or just loves dogs and wants what is best for them and their guardians moving forward. Having become directors of one of the training organisations that seem to be looked down upon in these discussions we thought we should go on the record and fight the good fight for animal welfare, wellbeing and ethics. 

I would imagine that most of our listeners are pretty clear on where our ethical standards are. Those who listen will also have a good idea of what the science, especially welfare sciences, are informing us about the use of aversive methods on ALL individuals. So although we thought we’d discuss these topics this certainly isn’t a bridge to try to combine our ethical approach with one that we do not support. On top of that we are also individuals with different takes on different things so we really hope you enjoy this episode. Topics we cover include:

This week we find ourselves transported back through time to ancient Siberia for a fascinating conversation about how, where and why dogs became our BFF's! We were thrilled to have archaeologist Dr Angela Perri join us for an episode all about Dog Domestication (Steve especially as he has been going on about this interview for WEEKS)! Angela has researched the story of early prehistoric dogs on sites across the globe and recently her and her team published a paper proposing a new theory as to where domestication may have taken place and how dogs spread across the world. Steve and Angela talk theories, the challenges of finding answers, the wonder of science, how you might observe domestication happening on your front door and MORE. Steve also reads out a PACT Lunch about music and dogs. This is such an interesting episode ENJOY!

Angela facts:

Dr Angela Perri is an archaeologist with primary interests in human-animal interactions, paleoecology, and paleoenvironments. Her research largely focuses on the nature of human-environmental interactions by analysing early relationships between humans, animals, climate, and landscapes. She particularly interested in the effects of climate change on prehistoric animal biodiversity and human responses to these changes.

Professor Carri Westgarth is Chair in Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Liverpool with a passion for understanding the relationships we have with our pets. With a background in animal behaviour and dog training she has trained in veterinary epidemiology and human public health. Her research interests focus on the implications of dog ownership for human health and wellbeing, but also how owner management of their dogs can impact dog welfare. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are used to tackle her primary research questions of how to improve population health through the promotion of dog walking, and how to prevent dog bites. Her expertise on understanding and changing the behaviour of dog owners is sought by many organisations wishing to prevent dog bites and promote ‘responsible’ dog owner behaviour, such as her work as a consultant for Royal Mail. She is also a Full Member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and founder of the Merseyside Dog Safety Partnership. In her spare time Carri teaches dog training classes, and previously was a professional Assistance Dog Instructor. Her practical experience in many areas relating to dogs, combined with a multi-disciplinary academic perspective, gives unique strength and relevance to her expertise.

Ryan Facts:

Ryan is the owner of Oxfordshire Animal Behaviour and Training (OABT) and has worked with over 1,000 clients and their pets. Because of his enthusiastic and upbeat approach to teaching, he often leads the puppy classes which have gained popularity around Abingdon. Ryan also takes on behaviour consultation cases with Charlotte, runs OABT’s behaviour rehab training sessions and produces tutorial videos and handouts for clients. His empathetic and supportive approach makes Ryan popular amongst his clients.

Ryan is a qualified dog trainer with the Professional Association of Canine Trainers (PACT) and a recognised animal training instructor with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC). He is currently recognised as a pre-certified clinical animal behaviourist with the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) and a candidate member of the Fellowship of Animal Behaviour Clinicians. He is working towards full membership of both organisations (certified clinical animal behaviourist and full member, respectively).

Ryan earned a distinction in the BSc(hons) Animal Behaviour and Welfare degree at Oxford Brookes University in 2019 and a distinction in the Clinical Animal Behaviour Master’s degree at the University of Lincoln in 2020. He plans to start a PhD in Animal Behaviour and Cognition in the next few years.

Alongside running OABT, Ryan is also a lecturer at Oxford Brookes University and Abingdon and Witney College, teaching on the animal behaviour-related degrees. He is also a tutor and assessor at PACT, whereby he teaches and supports students on their journey to becoming qualified dog trainers.

Tom Candy is a Senior Training and Behaviour Advisor for the UK's largest dog welfare organisation. Tom is responsible for overseeing the training and behaviour at multiple rehoming centres across the UK. His duties include assessment, management, and behaviour modification.

A passion for animal welfare and training led Tom to undertake a BSc (Hons) in bio-veterinary science, and an MSc in clinical animal behaviour from the University of Lincoln, UK.

Having started volunteering in rescue at the age of 15, Tom has been involved in a variety of aspects of rescue, Since graduating from university, Tom worked as a training and behaviour advisor at DogsTrust, locuming across 7 centres before moving to the senior training and behaviour team.

Fancy another dive into the incredible world of dogs? Thought so.

This week we have a stonker of an interview for you with the amazing Dr Carri Westgarth. Carri's new book “The Happy Dog Owner” gets released this week and it’s a winner (so go ahead and get yourself a pre order)!

This one is packed full of WOW moments and was another case of wishing we had another hour to talk to Carri. 

Fitting this one in quickly so Carri could promote the up-coming release this was one of the only times that Steve didn’t get to read the book which, as you’ll hear, he is very upset about 😉. For that reason we have put this out as a long form interview rather than a “Book Review Episode”. Fear not however as you will still get a brain full of doggy goodness as usual.

Dr Carri Facts!

Dr Carri Westgarth is senior lecturer in human animal interaction at the University of Liverpool and a full member of The Association Of Pet Behaviour Councillors (APBC). Her research has been featured in the Guardian, The New York Times and New Scientist and she has regularly shared her expertise on national TV and radio. Dr Westgarth has spent 15 years conducting scientific research into how people interact with their dogs, and the positive and negative impacts on their health they occur as a result. She has helped hundreds of dogs and their owners, match prospective owners with homeless dogs and new puppies, taught obedience and tricks, counselled owners through dealing with problematic behaviours such as aggression and trained official assistance dogs to work with handlers with disabilities.

Dani Facts!

Danielle is an Animal Behaviour Consultant based in Greater Manchester, UK. Danielle is a qualified Animal Behaviour Consultant and possess the necessary and relevant academic qualifications, which are backed up by over 18 years of practical experience, allowing her to practise, as an animal behaviourist. It is Danielle’s aim to provide caregivers with an insight into how their animals really think and the reasons behind their often problematic behaviours. Danielle is active on social media as the #Geekydogtrainer and offers free behaviour advice as an admin on the Positive Pet Advice Facebook group and through her  ‘Animal Behaviour Chats’ live,  can be found here or on her YouTubeChanne

The primary species Danielle works with are dogs however, due to her background in zoology and work within zoological facilities she is happy to see both domestic and non domestic species. Danielle’s previous work history includes zoological collections, exotic pet stores and kennels where she worked with a variety of animals from Rhino, Giraffe and Guinea pigs to Tree monitors, Milk Frogs and Marine Fish. Danielle is the first and only registered animal behaviourist who has been assessed for reptiles and has is both passionate and atheistic about reptile welfare, particularly lizards. Danielle’s MSc thesis focused on the factors affecting the stress of Green Iguanas kept as companion animals and she has a passion for enhancing and improving the welfare of captive reptiles.

Steve, Nat & Corrin are thrilled to be joined by Chirag Patel this week who is one half, along with the wonderful Nanci Creedon,  of a hosting super team for a conversation about their new TV show Cats and Dogs at War. If you haven't caught the show yet you MUST! In a world where it seems all too easy to shout about what you don't like on the telly box, this show has come along and shown just how to make animal training on television the RIGHT way! Unfortunately Nanci couldn't join us for the chat but that just means we have to have the dynamic duo back at some point (especially to hear about all the out takes). We also get into training techniques, reaching the human side of the equation and just how to be generally better in a world of pointing fingers.

Chirag Facts

Chirag entered the field professionally in 2004 and has since become a leading figure in the profession internationally. He consults on the behaviour management and training of all animals living under human care (including domestic and wild ones). He is highly sought after for work with high profile private clients, organisations as well as teaching workshops and presenting at conferences. Chirag has been an expert on a number of TV shows including on BBC 1’s TV Series Nightmare Pets SOS and more recently 5 Stars’ Cats and Dogs at War has given TV interviews worldwide.  

Chirag is passionate about the application of ethical behaviour change science to improve the life of animals living under human care by teaching animals to be active participants in their own daily and veterinary care in a low-stress manner. The goal is to empower all learners including the human ones.

For those who haven't heard of Steve (where have you been?) he is a force of nature in the Dog Training world. As well as being the head honcho and founder at the Institute For Modern Dog Training (IMDT) his recent book "Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy" took the world by storm.

We caught up with Steve to chat about the book, hear some classic stories and get an answer to the question "what would dogs do all day if the could choose themselves"?

Steve Mann has been a professional dog trainer and behaviourist for over 30 years. He has trained over 100,000 dogs and thousands of professional dog trainers. He is founder and chairman of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and presents seminars, courses and workshops for dog trainers and behaviourists worldwide. A regular on TV, Steve has starred in several shows including The Underdog Show and Who Let The Dogs Out?, as well as appearing on BBC Breakfast and Lorraine. He has also trained some high-profile pups, including those of Graham Norton, Lorraine Kelly and Theo Walcott.

It’s time for another Off The Shelf episode and this week Steve,Nat and Corrin are joined by the amazing Helen Motteram. We have a deep chat about the journey Helen took starting back in 1998 with her dog Sally which was one of her inspirations to want to help people with their dogs. We also talk about Helens Bird rescue called ‘Russells Rescue’ and, of course, Russel himself (if you don’t know what we are on about you will love this). Helen runs Social Paws with her partner Tristan and they are based in Cheltnam.

Helen also runs the fantastic Pet Professional Network (which we all happen to be a member of) If you have a pet business it is well worth a look. Helen describes it here in her own words. “PPN is the first business support organisation and membership for pet professionals who do not use any form of aversive methodology (pain or intimidation) to train, walk or care for any pet. From my own personal results working with thousands of pets and rescue dogs, I’ve seen first hand how training without force has given long term results – confident dogs and happy owners.  We apply this philosophy to people, too; employing a strict anti-bullying policy to protect our members, which fosters a true sense of belonging in a safe and confidential environment”.

Ken Ramirez is the Executive Vice-President (EVP) and Chief Training Officer of Karen Pryor Clicker Training where he helps to oversee the vision, development, and implementation of training education programs for the organization.

A 40+-year veteran of animal care and training, Ken is a biologist and animal behaviorist who has overseen or consulted on training projects for many zoological organizations throughout the world.

He began his training career working with guide dogs for the visually impaired and continues to work with organizations training dogs for service work, search-and-rescue, bomb detection and narcotic detection. Ken has also maintained a close affiliation with pet training throughout his career.
