Freelance is a Harlem-based collective and band of independent leaders with an expansive sound and encyclopedic knowledge of musical genres that afford them the ability to cross-pollinate styles and manipulate melody to create an aesthetic signature uniquely their own. The band features an all-star lineup of musicians that regularly accompany Grammy Award winning artists such as Robert Glasper, Solange, Estelle, Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard, Bilal, Terrace Martin, Lalah Hathaway, and more, and is comprised of founding leaders Smithsoneon (vocals) and Ausar the Ambassador (keyboards) along with Craig Hill (saxophone), Yasser Tejeda (guitar) and David “Dj” Ginyard (bass) and Justin Tyson (drums). Freelance’s sound is born from the sonic footprints of Mint Condition, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, and Robert Glasper. A Philadelphia native, James began his musical training in church and attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, which produced other notable acts Bilal, Boyz II Men and The Roots. Studying both vocal performance and instrumental music, James excelled as a vocalist and musician before continuing his education at Temple University majoring in jazz performance and music technology. James quickly grabbed attention and acclaim from artists both within and outside of his hometown of Philadelphia. Lady Alma, Kindred the Family Soul, Bilal, Jazmine Sullivan, Kelis, Ray Chew, The Jazzyfatnastees, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Kelly Clarkson and Gerald Veasley have all shared the experience of James keeping time behind them. In 2009, James teamed with one of house music's biggest producers, Kenny Dope to release his first commercially available project, an EP titled "Money for Love". This was the first time that he took the spotlights as a vocalist, and set the ground for his self-produced debut album "Conversations in Analog, Vol. 1". This album covered the genres he was most known for: jazz, R&B/soul and house. In addition to being the drummer/programmer on the album, he also showcases himself vocally on the album-ending track "Freedom". In 2017, James and his band, The Buttered Biscuits, released his follow-up EP, "Biscuit Street" which features a re-interpretation of the Tears for Fears classic "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", and Alyson Williams on a cover of the Emotions classic "Don't Ask My Neighbor". The project is the most personal of any he's worked on for any artist, as it includes "Give It A Chance", the song he wrote to propose to his wife. Currently, James is touring as the musical director for Vivian Green and featured drummer for the Screaming Headless Torsos. Angelo Whitehead commonly known as Ang Low is a Brooklyn-based contemporary R&B artist. The Tacoma, Washington native released his debut EP Life Goes Down in 2014. Life Goes Down received more than 250,000 plays on SoundCloud and Spotify with the help of his breakout single, “Can’t Describe Her.” The song was remixed with Ed Banger Records producer SebastiAn and featured in The Fader. “Can’t Describe Her” was also voted Bandcamp’s song of the week in 2015. Ang Low would spend most of 2015 collaborating with other musicians such as Laura Welsh (Island Records) and was listed as an artist to watch in 2016 by Clash Magazine. He briefly stepped away from the music scene, but resurfaced with a new single entitled, “Let Go” in Fall 2017. “Let Go” will appear on his forthcoming EP All I Remember. The 6-track EP will highlight Ang’s growth as a keyboardist, songwriter, and music aficionado. Acid Dad first appeared in the New York scene at the outset of 2015. After spending the year self-releasing demos recorded at their studio in upstate New York, the band garnered local praise from the likes of Oh My Rockness, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound and Stereogum. After releasing their debut EP “Let’s Plan a Robbery” in February of 2016, followed by their first sold out show at Baby’s All Right, Acid Dad embarked upon a two month tour of the United States. Fresh off their first tour, which included numerous SXSW performances as well as appearances on Daytrotter, Audiotree and Jam in the Van, the band headed straight back to work in their upstate New York recording studio. While recording, Acid Dad continued to play one-offs alongside their contemporaries including Thee Oh Sees, Diarrhea Planet, Night Beats and White Reaper. At the outset of 2017 the band began writing, demoing and recording with the intention of creating their debut full length. By maintaining an aggressive path of musical study and professional achievement, W. Lee Hogans has fashioned a distinct musical style. He formed his own band Pursuance in 2004. Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music, and made a big splash in NYC, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbès. Theo Croker was born and raised in Leesburg, in central Florida, on July 18, 1985. Leesburg was not exactly a hotbed of music, and Theo wasn’t exactly born with a horn in his hand. He first picked one up at the age of eleven, after a visit to New York City where he heard his grandfather play at Sweet Basil. (Doc Cheatham died the following year, at 92, in 1997.) Theo continued to listen to Doc’s recordings. Theo says, “I would just sit in my room and play my trumpet for hours without knowing what I was doing. I would slowly teach myself new notes and play along with recordings of my grandfather and other greats. I noticed the I could fit in with what I was hearing harmonically.” It was at a memorial service for his grandfather when he had his first chance to perform for jazz-savvy audience. “I was only twelve years old, but the way the music touched people and the way it made me feel was enough to set me for life. Navy Gangs is a pop quintet currently residing in the washed out and overly demanding area of New York City. Singer/Guitarist Matthew Tillwick, Guitarist Noah Kohll, and Drummer Gavin Cordaro began orchestrating music together in 2012 at Central High School in the red light district of Omaha where they failed their junior years miserably. For 2 months they took jobs working in the desert dome at the Henry Doorly zoo until they saved enough of their dismal wages for one way bus passes to New York City, where they moved in temporarily with Kohll’s grandmother Estelle. After making some new friends in Washington Square Park, the three boys found themselves in a basement scene in little Italy. It was there that they met their bassist, Wilson Keithline from Providence, Rhode Island.
