On Today's episode of Awesome Humans, we are joined by Aussie rocker, and lead singer from the heavy, hard hitting punk rock band ‘My kind of chaos’, Nic Griffiths! Nic's a multitalented musician, a singer, lyricist songwriter and self-taught sound engineer. Nic grew up in the Geelong punk scene in the late eighties, early nineties. He's been playing drums in punk bands since he was 16 years old, ‘My kind of Chaos’ is certainly a band to watch as they unleash their music on the Wharf. Nic Griffith is a household name on the Sydney indie music circuit best-known for his contributions to acts including High-tails, Big White, Dream Dog and Bored Shorts. Griffith's contribution as singer/guitarist for Big White has seen him thrice tour Europe and the States supporting acts like Ty Segal, Gang of Four and Black Lips, while single 'Bending Over Backwards' (High-tails) saw full rotation on triple j and was the ninth-most played song on the station in 2014. Blank GC is Sam’s brainchild and she’s part-owner as well as being the primary local music writer. She’s been lucky enough to work with some of Australia’s largest (and smallest) conservation groups and as a result, has been awarded a Young Australian of the Year award in Queensland for her environmental work and in 2013 was named as one of Queensland's Champions of Conservation. After launching Blank GC and seeing the growing need for support for local musicians and music businesses, Sam also co-launched the annual Gold Coast Music Awards, which had its first run in 2015, the event now taking place on the beach in Surfers Paradise. Donny is the managing director of the Australian Skateboarding community. Aside from that, Donny, is a coach at Slowcoach and the occasional stunt man. As a young budding entrepreneur trying to secure sponsorships, Donny learned the hard way that to secure belief in your own personal brand and to secure any kind of funding/sponsorship or support, there must be a solid backing. For Donny this was created through hard work and perseverance, and networking. Donny found success through listening and observing those around him in the skating community rather than assuming his own ideas were the winner and now Donny is in his third year of running the international competition "Rumble on the Reef' in Mackay on a 2.5 Million Dollar Skatepark. When Donny was a young skater there were two groups in Queensland focused on youth development of Skateboarding which consisted of a few people going to the skate park with a megaphone and a bag of tee shirts. Donny wanted to change this and sort out to create a real support network for youth in skating. It is people like Donny and his dedication to the craft that has seen waxing the curbs with a skateboard lead to international and Olympic sport recognition. During Covid, Donny has been running online competitions to keep judges and pro skaters in work and to keep the youth engaged and even give them the chance to win some prizes. Andy has had over 23 years’ experience in the event industry after studying a Bachelor of Science at university. Having got into the event industry after having worked in a rat laboratory at the University of Sydney, Andy left university. He went to work with his mum in the event industry in stage management. That was the start of Andy’s successful event career, having finished university and went straight into events and never worked in psychology. Today Andy is the director and co-owner of Summernats, MotorX and Out There Productions. He has worked with big events such as the Rugby League grand final back in 1995 all before losing his Father in 1996, where Andy stood up and took care of family through his business while his mum cared for his FatherFather. Andy reflects on the impact of COVID-19 and the impact it has had on the event industry, along with the consequences on the business. Having been profoundly affected due to the restriction which has seen all events to be cancelled or very limited, Andy has found time to spend with his family and to work on other parts of the business. Mark is a Muay Thai champion, having trained out of Strike Force Gym in Burleigh, Mark is now a trainer to aspiring fighters on the Gold Coast. Mark starts his story off by taking us back to his childhood. Having lost his father at a young age, Mark learned quickly how to look after himself, having later called himself the ‘Bully Basher'. Mark since a young age has always lived in Burleigh, aside from a few moments overseas Mark loves the Gold Coast has now lived here with his wife and kids. After completing his apprenticeship as a Plumber, Mark started to show an interest in Muay Thai. Through a mate that owned a gym and having been a footy player, Mark tried to up his skills in throwing a punch or two. Mark soon learn discipline through the art of fighting, he found that once he learned how to fight, he could get out of any situation. During this time, Mark learned not how to fight but how to learn different movements and styles with minimal violence. All while Mark and his partner were expecting their first child that would one day become an Australian Champion in fighting at the age of thirteen. In this episode of Awesome humans, we sat down with young Australian entrepreneur, Taj Pabari. Taj is the founder and chief executive officer of Fiftysix Creations, helping and educating young students about entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Taj created Fiftysix Creations back in 2014 at the age of fourteen and has since educated over 50,000 Australian students. Taj story takes us back to high school, although this bright young star didn’t enjoy school, he would soon go off to bigger and better things. Having started his blog at the age of eleven, Taj saw the value behind his work and determination. After receiving his first paycheck from Google, he soon realised that hard work and dedication could make him money. Although, Taj didn’t enjoy school nor did he continue his higher education at university, at the age of fourteen Taj had created fiftysix creations. His creative mind went on to become the 2014 Australian Young Innovator of the as well of the Queensland Young Australian of the Year. And he was nominated the National Australia Day Council Young Australian of the Year. And this was just the start of this awesome human’s story. Today, Taj reflects on the impacts of COVID-19. Rob starts his story off by taking us back to his childhood. In 1964 Rob was born in Mooloolaba, Queensland. Being a Queenslander, Rob grew up on his grandfather’s cattle station in Charter's Towers while also being raised by his mother and the Aboriginals on the station. Having moved back to Toowoomba for a short while, Rob and his mother found themselves moving to Singapore and Hong Kong at the age of three. After living overseas for ten years, Rob and his mother decided to move back across the water back home to Australia. Rob, since moving back to Australia had a passion for cooking. All the flavours from Singapore and Hong Kong helped him discover a love for food. Having become a Chef shortly after school, Rob trained in Toowoomba before moving to the Sunshine Coast where he lives today. It was from there the idea of Fish Ski started. Having always loved deep water fishing Rob one day at a Noosa Bar, saw some tuna busting up in the water. He got excited but had no way of getting a boat out in the shallow water, he was disappointed. So, Rob came up with the idea of attaching his fishing kit to the back of a jet ski. From there Rob’s invention had caught the eyes of other fishers which lead to the success of his fishing kit on the back of a ski. In the world today due to COVID-19, the beauty industry has been heavily impacted by the restrictions put in place, enforcing beauty salons to put a hold on their services. Otto reminisces about times before COVID-19 reflecting on his glamorous life travelling around the world and attending beauty events, such as the Lash World Cup. An event where beauticians from around the world come together and compete in a lash-off. Today Otto lives on the Gold Coast with his wife and sons. Heather was able to deal with her past and start to create a successful future. Heather’s story and message encourage others to open up and talk about their problems and feelings to someone, as life is just too quick. Having left school in year 11, Tara went to undertake a course in beauty school. Deciding that wasn't for her Tara found another passion aside from powerlifting, cooking. With her love for cooking, Tara went and took over her parents’ business a café. Tara is continuing to work in the hospitality industry today while also continuing her training for powerlifting. There is more to Tara's story than just lifting weights. Tara opens up about her personal life, including what kind of kid she was in high school to how much her life had changed since powerlifting back in 2017. She shares about the places she has visited, and today Tara is still competing and training for comps but due to the impact of Covid-19 her comp date in October has yet to be decided. David has had a successful career while also suffering from bipolar one. Having grown up with mental health issues within his family, David knows better than anyone what it's like to have your life impacted by mental health. This lead David's passion for helping others deal with their mental health. Aside from the Black Dog Institute, David is an instructor for Mental Health First Aid Australia, where he learnt all about mental health and how to help others assist treatment. David also enjoys writing which lead to creating a website, where he could share his teachings and ideas with others. Today's awesome human is Clinton Schultz, a man who continuously strives to better the world one day at a time. Clinton has had a very interesting life. Out of highschool Clinton became a chef, travelling around the world, he is also an aspiring Ninja Warrior staring on the show twice, but unfortunately getting injured during the trials on both occasions! A Jack of all trades, Clinton has also focused his energies toward helping his community. Clinton went on to earn a PHD in Psychology, and today Clinton is currently one of only 20 male practicing Aboriginal psychologists in Australia. In 2010, he opened his own consultancy company, focusing on holistic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander approaches to mental health, focusing on emotional, social, and cultural well-being through therapy. In 2018 he was also named Griffith University's Outstanding First Peoples Alumni Award. Through some personal struggles and wins Clinton, alongside his wife, Lozen, in 2017 founded Sobah, Australia's first non-alcoholic craft beer company. Clinton’s passion for cooking and love of beer led to this venture, and it was through these passions Clinton came to create a non-alcoholic beer for the social drinker. But this non-alcoholic beverage is just one small part of the Sobah company, Sobah is also striving to establish a not-for-profit holistic centre providing holistic care for people struggling with mental illness in the near future. I’m a huge rugby league fan! I’m devoted to the mighty Manly Sea Eagles since I was a little fella, and it wasn’t even my family’s club! I am privileged to interview football royalty – Max Delmege who saved the Manly Sea Eagles Warringah football club from financial ruin from 2002, investing millions until a very public and ugly exit in 2010. During this golden age, the Sea Eagles climbed up from the bottom of the ladder each year to win the 2008 season after a 12 year hiatus. Join Max and I as we go back to Sydney in the 60s where this self-made businessman went to the top of real estate and then rugby league. As a former radio jockey, Max enjoys spinning a yarn and I love listening to this bloody good Aussie bloke - and in my book: an Awesome Human. Check out the episode.

Are you thinking too small with your qualification? Sometimes you just never know where your qualification might take you in life and it may not be where you expect. For Awesome Human Greg Przybylski it was to the pinnacle of the motorboat industry and all over the world – as crew member on luxurious and powerful super yachts. Greg apprenticed as an air-conditioning refrigeration mechanic in Australia. Yes, super yachts have refrigeration and air-conditioning, so was that the link? Not quite. Whilst Greg was travelling and working in Europe, the rite of passage for any young Australian, he got asked to repair equipment on a small motor boat about to sail from Gibraltar to Puerto Rico. The owner was impressed and convinced Greg to quit his traditional job and come across the Atlantic with three other men. That’s how Greg got his first floating job. Now an experienced marine engineer for many types of crafts up to 84 metres and thousands of horsepower! His air-conditioning refrigeration mechanic skills gave him diversity for a workplace that takes a limited size team. Literally, every hand counts on deck. “It was the best trade I could have possibly done. When you are working on those systems and mainly to do with the physics, you have to be an extremely good welder and solder. You have to know electrical work and circuitry. So many things that this trade set me up later on in life.” “I could fix diesels, pumps, anything that rotated, or didn’t rotate that should – I could fix most things. I was good with my hands. I could weld the steel on boats.” “When I first started there were no qualifications to be an engineer on a super yacht because they weren’t classified by the International Marine Organisation. As long as an insurance company would accept my qualifications I could get the job. When I wanted to climb the ladder, the Marine Merchant wanted to keep me at a class 3 but I did one boat with 12,000 horse power, 60 meters long, that could do 35 knots - that’s a lot of power. I couldn’t get yacht qualifications so I was getting commercial qualifications. I did more courses when I started doing big re-fits: marine engineering and electronics.” Today and decades after his first yacht job, Greg is an experienced crew member for many types of craft up to 84 metres! Life is never dull when you work on the largest leisure watercraft in the world. To build one super yacht costs the same as a skyscraper like the Q1 so Greg Przybylski crewed the equivalent of a 25-story skyscraper! Greg, after many years working as Chief & Project Engineer on the super yachts now through Australasian Yacht Services Pty Ltd provides a world-wide private consultancy and engineering project management service for owners wishing to build & maintain super yachts. What a life! When it comes to your qualification, do you need to think bigger?

A bucket list moment can change your health and wealth long after. On Awesome Humans podcast, Terry ‘Tappa’ Teece, Gold Coast local legend and surf commentator shares his coastal life. Tappa is good at telling a yarn. One of those personal moments for Tappa resonated with me weeks into my new healthy lifestyle. You see, Tappa who surfs every day and contributes to his surf scene, he’s in his 50s when he wins a trip to Hawaii - in a raffle at the 2016 Byron Bay Ben Memorial Classic surf contest. Hawaii had been a huge goal for Tappa his whole life, having surfed since he was a kid. So what does he do to prepare for this surf trip of a lifetime – he quits smoking. But wait there’s more. “That Hawaii trip was really crucial point in my life. Mate, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me.” Then Tappa goes to Hawaii and happens to hang a lot at North Shore where unlike other places, there is no nightlife, and he can only buy a few beers at a local supermarket. So Tappa surfs all day and at night has a few quiet coldies. It’s important to mention Tappa is also a Gold Coast event MC, and writer for the local music scene, a songwriter/musician himself. In Hawaii, Tappa gives up drinking. “I had all this time to think and I was carrying a bit of weight from quitting smoking, and I thought, I'm just going to have a break from drinking. I haven't had a drink since I got back in February 2017. Last time I weighed myself which was over six months ago and I'd lost 15 kilos.” Tappa admits in the interview that an unexpected positive is he used to barely pay his mortgage. Now he’s easily paying the monthly instalments and saving as well. Tappa’s tip: “It takes six weeks until you notice a change in yourself, and it's like when you break your arm. Six weeks. You do your knee. Six weeks. Everything is six weeks, so do it for six weeks.” It’s awesome that a lucky moment has snowballed into so much more.

Humble pie and politics don’t often mix but this Awesome Human owns the recipe. This week on Awesome Humans podcast is Councillor Glenn Tozer, recently re-elected local politician of division 9 Gold Coast. I call him Captain Gold Coast because of his great passion for this great part of the world. He is a Christian family man whose wife is an awarded social documentarian. Cr Tozer and his young family are the kind of representatives that communities need to make change they value. When I first met Glenn Tozer five years ago, I liked that he was humble enough to say he can make more difference as Councillor than as Mayor, and that sense of humbleness remains today: “I feel it's super important to keep humble. I've got a group of really great people around me who don't let me become a dick. If you're going to stay humble, you're going to be calm, and you're going to stay centred about what's important in life.” “I'm a big believer in the idea that the community will determine who's best for them and that's why I always fight for transparency, accountability and openness. These are things really important to our democracy and our community and I believe people will make good decisions when they are well informed.” “The thing I'm afraid of is of us making decisions about things that are false or misleading. I think we are so afraid of failure. I'm actually not afraid of not getting the outcome if we play fair.” “There is an element of give and take in politics. You have to make compromises but I'm not willing to compromise on the big issues.” I agree with Cr Tozer that Gold Coast people are very focused on a fantastic quality of life. We all want to balance a strong local economy with its impacts like traffic congestion, and urban development. As passionate basketball fans, Cr Tozer and I speculated on Australian basketball players, and echoing my former mentor, Brett Brown, coach of Philadelphia 76ers: “Trust the process”.

I really connected with Scotty because we both had tough school days due to attention difficulties. We both failed high school. Now Scotty is living in LA about to live in the same burb as The Kardashians and The Biebers – what a legend of a career that’s still going! Scotty’s sung live for millions and to the world’s greatest musicians and celebrities at huge fundraising galas. These days Scotty has even managed to diversify his work so he can stay closer to his wife by flipping houses in America with a life-long Aussie mate. Awesome! Scotty has a lot of stories to tell and one I wanted to know about was how he met the late Verne ‘Mini Me’ Troyer at several of these fund-raising galas. Hope you enjoy this Awesome Human!!

Chris Dickson is a registered psychologist with more than 15 years experience. When he met me, A very attractive Entrepreneur with a lot of issues including ADD, ADHD, Hyperactivity, Social Issues, Mild Depression and a lot of other ailments that had be previously diagnosed, he knew his world had changed (Hopefully for the better). Chris was the first person to ever diagnose me with what is actually wrong with me. I am afraid of Boredom. Since we have been seeing each other on a regular basis Chris has taught me how to mediate, become one with myself and actually enjoy slowing down a little. I have a long way to go to become the person I want to be however this bloke has changed my life.
