Get comfortable first. Avery is in green sweatpants and an old red tee with a gold eagle that has nearly washed away, the kind of thing that knows your shape without asking you to become a different one.

A hello to you, whoever is out there with a mug and a long day behind you. Two people keeping another old house, a long way from here, and a light in their eyes he recognized. Then, on Monday, scones out of thin air: light brown sugar, corners gone almost to toffee, and a maple cream glaze that sets in thin glassy lines.

Then a reading for Elias. The house before anyone is awake, a page with one word on it, river, the Yellowstone going past Gardiner at its own speed, and a guest by the fire who asked the question Elias has carried all year: who does that for you? About keeping a quiet ledger of who called and who came, and learning instead to hold people to the care in the work. The cup set down, already made the way you take it.

From the kitchen: maple and brown sugar scones with a maple cream glaze. Two cups of flour, half a teaspoon of salt, two and a quarter teaspoons of baking powder at altitude (a tablespoon nearer the sea), a third of a cup of light brown sugar, packed, half a cup of cold butter, about a cup of heavy cream. 425 degrees, 13 to 15 minutes. The glaze: a cup of powdered sugar, three spoonfuls of maple, half and half until it falls in a ribbon, a pinch of salt.

A baby pumpkin on the desk. A family ring with a row of very small diamonds. And a week of missed buses that kept putting Avery, somehow, exactly where he was supposed to be.

First, Denver.

Lunch with someone who has become important to the work. An afternoon beside an old letterpress born in 1933. A garden two new friends insisted he see before the light went.

Then, a few days later, another bus and another town.

Idaho Springs, a place Avery had driven past for years and never properly entered. A first walk through town. An afternoon in the warm water of the hot springs caves. Another reminder that some places do not need to become home in order to become part of you.

At the center of the room is Elias, from Met Before the Introduction.

Wooden letters resting backwards in their drawers. People who first saw him in the middle of an ordinary day, before the introduction had been prepared, and came back anyway.

Avery has spent much of his life making beautiful things larger.

A room becomes home.
A kindness becomes proof.
A friendship becomes a future.
A good afternoon begins carrying architectural plans before dinner.

This Sunday asks for something different.

Let the thing remain what it is.
Not smaller.
Accurate.

Because actual size does not mean insignificant.

A door is a door.
A wall is a wall.
A garden can simply make you happy.
A person can matter before you know what they will become.

And a beautiful thing does not have to promise forever in order to have been beautiful.

Then six minutes on a bicycle through Frisco at the gold hour, and the discovery that I know this town well enough to leave it. The versions of people we keep and defend. Why the later truth does not crawl backward and erase the earlier one. A portrait catches a Tuesday afternoon, not a person. Home as the thing that survives the change. The question of the week: what is one beautiful thing you still protect from being rewritten? The house pumpkin bread, with the numbers for nine thousand feet. Resemblance.

Fall has never felt new to Avery. It arrives every year dressed differently, and he recognizes it before he understands why: a certain yellow, the brown underneath it, light going flatter in the afternoon. And suddenly he is also on Maley Road, in Georgia, watching his stepmother mark the season.

An essay about resemblance, the word more generous than sameness. How memory keeps what it likes, by color and texture. The versions of a self lined up like a police lineup, and why all of them were him, in different light. Elias at a fire, moving a log that did not need moving, and loving him for getting up anyway. The scone that is ruined by too much care. The leaf that was not dishonest when it was green; it simply had not reached October. Places and people and books that do not save us but keep us company. And the next Avery, who he hopes resembles this one, keeps the good parts, and leaves the rest in the field, where things decompose and something else grows.

Then, what came back. On Sunday the house asked what beautiful thing you still protect from being rewritten. The first answer arrived within the hour, from a reader almost seventy: five years old at a screen door, a soft southern rain, the metal smell of the screen, arms out wide. Read with her permission.

The first Sunday Room. Tuesday carries the finished essay; Sunday carries the life around it.

A prelude. Not the leaving; the thing before it.

Avery started on the footbridge, turned left toward the post office, and for six minutes rode through a town that has held a very large version of his life. Not the whole thing. That distinction matters now.

On a boy who spent years looking for home and the man who learned to make one almost everywhere he went: a cup placed correctly, a lamp instead of an overhead light, a book left open. On twenty-three addresses and the superstitions they train into a person. On the innkeeper in Good Little Innkeeper, who thought that if the room stayed warm enough he could stay inside it forever, and on what Still, by Design. offered him instead. On the stillness he once built walls around, which turned out to have come with him. On gold, which is not the absence of shadow but what happens when light reaches something at the right angle.

He expected an orchestra. There was one. It was the world outside.

The Part That Stays Green.

Avery went down to the water for a few minutes with his phone, not because he had something to say. The creek was moving, the trees were yellow, mostly, and one green leaf hung so close to the lens it took up more of the picture than it had any right to. He nearly moved it. He didn't.

An essay on how fast fall happens in the mountains and how everyone in Colorado says the same sentence about it every year; on a man who can turn a chair facing the wrong direction into a four-part emotional thesis, attempting restraint; on the trees, which are not performing a lesson and do not have Instagram accounts; on change that never waits until the previous version of your life has been properly archived; on the hour when the windows are still bright and the room has started glowing back, gold outside, amber in, the glass holding both; on photographs, which keep the light and nothing else; on enough, which has a bad reputation and deserves better; and on the difference between having evidence and having been there.

Thursday began with the Pegasus bus leaving Frisco without Avery, twice. It ended beside water in the Denver Botanic Gardens, not reaching for a notebook. In between: Courtney DeWinter, his PR counsel, across a table again; and David and Julie Sandusky of Idea Chic, who had met him in motion, working, carrying things, not introducing anyone, and noticed anyway. Inside their shop lives Hazel, a letterpress born in 1933, who is very good at pressure.

An essay on the difference between being noticed and being seen. On the boy who learned early how to make himself readable, and the man who built a life out of it. On construction that is not the opposite of sincerity. On old wooden type that says nothing alone and spells a person together. And on what home turns out to be: not a place, a person. The one who saw you before you started and came back anyway. Sometimes that person is you.

The Pumpkin Who Kept the Light. A story.

There was once a pumpkin that grew beside a little house at the bottom of a hill. He was not the biggest, or the roundest, but he was orange, and he was a very good listener. Every morning two brothers came through the garden. Then summer became September, September became October, and the boys said he was ready.

A story about keeping things: a face drawn with one eyebrow higher than the other, a light placed inside, an envelope above the kitchen sink, and the difficult part of growing things, which is that you cannot hurry them by watching.

Written for Jeremiah and James, who will grow, and change, and still always know the way home. There will be a book, with pictures, when the pictures are done.

And on the desk, the first letter from a listener. Three people arriving from three directions, each saying, in a different way, I found you.

The Versions We Keep.

There is pumpkin bread cooling when this one starts, and a letter on the desk. My first from a listener. I do not read it aloud; it belongs first to the person who sent it. But somewhere around the second reading it occurred to me that the letter is another version of me. Somebody formed an Avery in their mind and wrote to him. He is me. He is not all of me.

The first time I learned that another person could keep a different version of someone I loved, I was ten, and it was a small black notebook that did not belong to me. This episode goes back to that notebook, and to a boy on a bicycle who was my best friend in the whole wide world and could also be horrible, and to the thing those two taught me between them: that seeing and loving are not opposites, and that seeing is not ownership either.

Also in this one: why people want a bad guy, and why my life keeps wandering out of position for a victim story. The difference between vindication and authorship. Wednesday and Friday, and why I will not let Friday revise Wednesday. The people who become structural, living on in the way I make coffee or notice the quiet person at a table. The question that has followed me most of my life, did it reach you, and what happens when love is given a job. And the sentence I have been turning over all day, which sounds colder than I mean it: I will love you until I don't. Past tense is not an accusation. It is tense.

The Amber Thread.

I am browning butter when this one starts, which turns out to be the whole point.

The same smell has been in a kitchen in Georgia, a rental in Montana, a town in Colorado where the road stops, and now here, at nine thousand feet, where it takes longer because everything does.

Four kitchens, twenty years, one smell.

That is a map.

So this episode follows the map, and it follows it by the water.

Georgia, where the water has been going the same direction a long time. Cuxhaven, at the top of Germany, where the tide goes out so far that people walk where the water was, and where a sixteen year old learned the wrong lesson: that absence is temporary and everything comes back if you know the schedule.

Twenty-three addresses that came out of believing it.

A valley in Montana where the water comes up out of the ground already warm and does not heal anybody.

And Frisco, which is not the end of a road.

Frisco is where I turned around.

Also in this one: why an inn is a dangerous place to be good at your job. What it means to take two cups off the shelf when there is only one person. The difference between a place that is finished and a place that is ready.

And the thing the water finally taught me, which is the opposite of what I thought it said.

It does not come back.

It goes on.

There is a recipe, because there always is. My mother's rice krispie treats, with brown butter and two cups of marshmallows held back to the end, and one rule that matters more than the rest of it put together: you do not press them down.

A Sunday Special, because some essays do not wait for Tuesday.

This year has been hard. It has also been extraordinary. I have stopped asking those two things to cancel each other out.

In this one: what Still, by Design. taught me about stillness and what Good Little Innkeeper is teaching me about truth. Being so good at meaning that imagination starts impersonating evidence. Why good intentions are not receipts. The exhausting belief that there is always one more sentence that will finally make someone see what you see.

And my own version of something people call the Let Them Theory. Mine is not about no longer caring. I care. Probably too much. Mine is: let them have their version. Let them remember it differently. Let them say no. Let them leave. And then do the harder thing. Do not move into it. Their version belongs to them. Your life belongs to you.

The Water Between Places.

Episode Three. The one that goes back for my grandmother.

I meant to tell you about my grandmother and her scones. Every time I tried to get to her, I kept finding water: a hot spring in Montana I went to get sober beside, a river in Colorado that would not stop for anything, and the flat green heat of Georgia, where the watcher in me was born at a kitchen table, listening to women say "remember when."

So this is an essay about what survives the leaving. About carrying a recipe across a country without knowing you packed it. About the difference between changing and losing yourself. And at the end, the original: Mema's orange scones, in her own measures, before altitude, before any of this. She had one from a chain, decided she could do better, and did.
