It’s part of ‘Creative Industries Week’ - where students at the University of Sunderland have a week-long gap in taught classes and are invited to a range of sessions that explore a range of creative disciplines.

We brought together three people who work in the creative industries - journalists Rachel Charlton-Dailey, Godstime David, and videographer Sophie Willox. They shared about their journeys, their interests, their challenges, and what advice they can offer to emerging creative professionals.


Our Panelists:

Rachel Charlton-Dailey is an award-winning disabled journalist, activist and author. She wrote Ramping Up Rights: An Unfinished History of British Disability Activism, which she’s been touring around the country this year - and Ruby Hastings Writes Her Own Story (Collins, 2024). Rachel is a columnist at The Canary, and has previously reported for the BBC, The Big Issue, Metro, The Guardian and The Daily Mirror. She is also the founder of The Unwritten and co-founder of Taking The Pip. When Rachel isn’t writing, she can be found walking her sausage dog, Rusty.

Godstime David is a Nigerian-born multimedia journalist and communications strategist. She holds an MA in Journalism and works full-time as a ghost reporter while also serving part-time as a community journalist in Sunderland. Currently, Godstime is consulting for a private TV station, where she is helping to establish a new studio from the ground up, and she recently worked as a video journalist on the Generation Delta project, collaborating with a team of Black and Brown professors across Universities in England. Her work spans investigative and community-based reporting - Godstime’s dedication to investigative and community journalism was recently recognised when she won the Best Community and Investigative Reporting of the Year Award by the Women in Worship Music/Media, celebrating her impactful work in uncovering stories within the community.


Sophie Willox is also a University of Sunderland graduate - Sophie now brings her scriptwriting and editing skills to her full-time role as Videographer and Content Creator at Foresight - a creative agency in Sunderland. Alongside their client work, with recent partners such as the NHS, the Royal Airforce, and Gig Savvy, Foresight has grown into a training provider for emerging creatives across the North East - and hopefully useful for everyone in this room, it’s called 'Creators Academy' - they deliver Adobe Certified Professional Courses in creative editing software.

It’s our most jam-packed episode of ArtyParti yet; we’ll hear the voices of over thirty artists, creatives, stall-holders, performers, and visitors - as well as performances by Houghton Brass band, magician Chris Cross, drumming workshops led by Sacred Sounds (Drummers), and spoken word poetry by members of King Ink CIC.


They’re all brought together for the ‘Sunderland Art Festival’ - the final of three art festivals that took place throughout summer and early Autumn in Sunniside Gardens. We’ll hear why festivals like this matter; not just for providing the residents of Sunderland access to arts, crafts, spoken word, performances, and creative experiences, but bringing together a community of creators in the heart of the city centre.

]]> Artist, and Festival Organiser & Director Su Devine tours us around the Sunderland Art Festival in Sunniside Gardens.


It’s our most jam-packed episode of ArtyParti yet; we’ll hear the voices of over thirty artists, creatives, stall-holders, performers, and visitors - as well as performances by Houghton Brass band, magician Chris Cross, drumming workshops led by Sacred Sounds (Drummers), and spoken word poetry by members of King Ink CIC.


They’re all brought together for the ‘Sunderland Art Festival’ - the final of three art festivals that took place throughout summer and early Autumn in Sunniside Gardens. We’ll hear why festivals like this matter; not just for providing the residents of Sunderland access to arts, crafts, spoken word, performances, and creative experiences, but bringing together a community of creators in the heart of the city centre.

Reading from Vane’s website; “Death Magic, part of Gem Arts’ Masala Festival, offers a poignant journey through the intersection of neurodivergent experience, and the rich tapestry of Punjabi perspectives on death, ancestry, and the enduring power of memory."

It was, in my own opinion, a beautiful and vibrant exhibition considering the subject, and it was moving to hear about the strong relationship Sofia had with their father which elements of the series.

It's kicked off by a moving and evocative speech by Dr. Suzy O'Hara, Lecturer in Digital Arts and Enterprise: "In times of crisis, we must hope." Suzy reflects on this year's graduates; "I believe that artistic skills and competencies... play a fundamental role in realising disruptive, alternative worlds that help secure our futures... We need creativity, and a radical imagination."

We imagine glass as delicate and fragile, and Rosie Tremlett uses this sense of fragility to explore the relationship between the hearing world, and the deaf world, through her intricate ‘conches’ made of glass. Whereas another glass blower, Hannah Masi has embraced the discards of this fragile process through ‘The Goblet Bug’, and chose to amass the, quote, ‘failures’ into a single piece. And Jiayun Ding breaks down the glass process into different components, displayed in a collection of jars, as a way of exploring the cycle of human life and death.


Across the building, Melissa Duncan, created an immersive walk-through experience of a collection of paintings about learning life lessons while growing up, all dedicated to her grandma, Ada. And through a series of painted birds, whose feet are golden and becoming part of the frame itself, Jenny Hawkins documents the true stories of women and their experiences.


Downstairs, two photographers were sharing a gallery space, and both collections are united by the effects of humans on the natural environment. One of them is Colin Pickett, exploring waste sites on coastal landscapes. And in photographer Matthew Lewis’ collection ‘Cats of Greece’, he documents the lives of the four-legged island dwellers who live their lives on the streets of Greek islands.

And Tyron Santiago, who is currently studying his final year of BA Animation and Games Art at the University of Sunderland, is working on a critical dissertation which investigates the negative impacts that A.I. might post to artists and to the arts world.

Andreas composed this piece as the winning entry to a competition celebrating 18 years of the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra.  Supported by Arts Council England, their project “Coming of Age” invited new, emerging composers, like Andreas, to submit their compositions - and was performed at ‘Proms at the Point’ in Sunderland.

Poupazis is also a David Puttnam Scholar, having worked as music composer alongside various other film production students on a film about an asylum seeker living in Sunderland - which we discuss in detail.

Meet "the naughty rebels of theatre", fusing together live music, pub quizzes, film installations, club nights, comedy, and glitter to create accessible theatrical experiences.

With an ethos of collaboration and experimentation at the heart of their ethos, The Six Twenty aim to break down barriers to entry which could deter people from getting involved in theatre.

Today, we discussed the upcoming new venture - a new series of subverted "club night" immersive art performances, at Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle - which you can check out tonight and tomorrow.

Also, with six years worth of "Mixtape" under their belt, we looked ahead at their upcoming Xmas Mixtape, at Live Theatre in Newcastle later this month.

Five writers in Sunderland were selected for “Museum Pieces”, which will showcase performances of original work by these five writers at the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.

Walls of this gorgeous little bistro were completely covered in art, the floor absolutely packed with people.  Bistro du Parc's owner Viviane Chatel is artist herself, and one of the two Co-Directors of Hoast, alongside Co-Director and Artist Beth J Ross.

Also joining us live, four of the nearly forty other artists / crafters who were included in their summer showcase; each representing different focuses and specialisms. 

  • Igor Tavares a.k.a. “Sphyfro” - an Artist / Poet / Dancer, who shared about his upcoming work based on the four "elements" of fire, water, earth, and fire.
  • Irmy Werner - often exhibiting at the Tynemouth marker, Irmy is a Jeweller, and she runs community craft-based workshops.
  • Adam Daniels - a Contemporary Artist, who specialises in landscape painting, and is putting together a series 
  • Ruth Siddals - an Artist who shared about her collaborative approach to this exhibition with Hoast, and how bringing together thoughts from varying artists has helped inform her own practice through reflection.

Lady Kitt, a "Maker, Activist, and Drag King", who has responded to the text against a statue of Ancient Greek poet Sappho in the Bowes Museum, which coyly glosses over Sappho's bisexuality.

Judy Dibiase, a ceramic artist, who created an astounding 200 cups, adorned with the poetry of Bowes Museum co-founder Joséphine Bowes. Judy has invited guests to take away a cup, in exchange for stories.

Emmanuela Wroth, who is entering the second year of her collaborative doctoral project with the Bowes Museum and Durham University, shares her reaction to Judy's cups, and the reclamation of aspects Joséphine's life lost to history.

Claire Baker, an embroidery artist who teaches at the Northern School of Art in Middlesborough, shares about the strengths of working alongside other artists in response to the museum, and how #Untitled10 allowed her to stretched

Amanda Gerry of the Churches Conservation Trust, shares more about their multi-million pound development of the church, which is now underway.

Sarah Carr, Project Manager of the Sunderland Heritage Action Zone, shares about their plans (some underway, many still to come) to restore and redevelop buildings in the city.

And Callum Parker from the mental health charity Sunderland Mind, tells us about their young people's project WASP - "Wellbeing Action and Support Project", working with young people 7-18 across the city.
