Born in 1987 and raised in London, John draws upon his Cypriot and Irish heritage to inform his art, which spans sculpture, installation, painting, and performance. His work critically examines themes of upbringing, class, and masculinity, often inviting audiences to become active participants in the artistic experience.

John's journey into the art world is both profound and inspiring. While serving a 6 year sentence at HM Young Offender Institution Feltham, he encountered Koestler Arts—the UK's leading prison arts charity. This engagement marked the beginning of a transformative path: from a participant in prison art programs to a mentee, scholar, arts worker, judge, and eventually, co-curator of Koestler Arts' annual exhibition at the Southbank Centre last December, which I saw and was absolutely fantastic.

In 2022, John earned an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins and was selected for the South London Gallery's post-graduate residency program. He now operates from his studio on his Residency at Somerset House, continuing to create art that challenges hierarchies of art experience and fosters community dialogue.

The South London Gallery stated on Costi’s work; Costi’s work is rooted in healing and transformation. Using play and conversation to create artworks that bring people together and form social connections, he often takes found objects to create sculptures and installations, a practice he refers to as ‘Culture-Mating’. He uses spoken word in his practice, and also creates characters and environments that draw on his personal heritage and experiences growing up to celebrate London’s traditions and histories

Costi also heads crime diversion groups in probations and prisons.

You can learn more about his work at www.johncostiart.com

Mat is an English artist based in London. His art primarily involves photography and video, with notable works such as "Bullet Hole," which gained acclaim during its display at the Freeze exhibition in 1988. As one of Collishaw's most recognized pieces, "Bullet Hole" (1988), featured a striking close-up photograph appearing to resemble a bullet wound on a person's scalp, intriguingly presented on 15 light boxes bringing a beauty and almost stained glass window aesthetic.

Collishaw's artistic repertoire spans a mesmerizing array of optical illusions, paintings, dynamic projections, and kinetic sculptures. Each creation serves as more than just a visual spectacle; they act as portals to introspection, prompting contemplation on fundamental aspects of psychology, history, and science. Beneath the surface allure and vibrant aesthetics of Collishaw's pieces lies a profound exploration.

For this episode, Matt is joined by Juno Calypso.

Juno Calypso is a British photographer known for her distinctive self-portraits, her work is a powerful exploration of feminism, isolation, loneliness, and self-sufficiency. In addition to her personal work, Calypso also makes her mark as a commercial photographer. In 2016, she was a joint winner of the British Journal of Photography International Photography Award. Two years later, she received the prestigious Vic Odden Award from the Royal Photographic Society. Working solo, Calypso has crafted highly stylized photographs of herself while adopting the persona of "Joyce," a fictional alter-ego. These self-portraits take place in surreal storytelling settings. Her self-portraits as "Joyce" are the cornerstone of her work, portraying a "bored, frustrated, lonely housewife of her imagination." These images transport us to unfamiliar and over-the-top landscapes, providing a commentary on the restrictive aspects of femininity and societal expectations.

Calypso's work explores the rituals of seduction and the pursuit of a "perfect vision of oneself." One of her noteworthy series, "The Honeymoon," features her alone in American couples-only honeymoon resorts. This collection exudes a sense of claustrophobia, blending frustration with loneliness, as noted by critics. Calypso has aptly commented on her own work, highlighting her intention to critique the construction of femininity. She once said, "I used to take pictures of Joyce as a way of making a critique on the laboured construction of femininity, but now I’m starting to see that the problem isn’t the make-up and bizarre body improvement devices, but the way society treats women who invest so deeply in their appearance." You can check out her work at the Welcome Collection in the Cult of beauty exhibition on to 28th April, 2024.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Henri Matisse and Roy Lichtenstein, Stone had inserted representations of his own existing artworks into his works. Examples of his work include "It Came out of Nowhere, he said staring at an empty space", a document wallet made in collaboration with Jonathan Monk; "Device #5", a series of non-functional devices; and "A lamp made by the artist for his wife", a series of ad hoc lamps.

Gander wants to work outside of the traditional ways of producing art, so he has collaborated with his daughters and has used different pseudonyms.
The guest for this episode is Peter Kennard. Peter is currently professor of Political Art at the Royal College of Art. He is most renowned for his iconic photomontages comprising of various motifs such as missiles, gas masks, bombs and images of earth. He created work for the posters used by the Campain for Nuclear Disarment (otherwise known as the CND) used on campaigns in the 1970s and 80s. These works included a re-hash of John Constables The Hay Wain, and was called Haywain with Cruisemissiles, a transposition of Constables painting with Cruise missiles ready to launch on the cart. This work highlighted anxieties and tensions in British society during the missile deployment of the 1980s where the East and West stand-off had the potential to push towards nuclear disaster.

Another work Kennard is famous for, a photomontage called Photo Op which was created in Photoshop using an image of Tony Blair taking a selfie during the 2005 General Election campaign. This has then been re-hashed to look as if Tony Blair is taking a selfie against a backdrop of burning oil. It was described by The Guardian as “the definitive work of art about the war”. Kennard says he was trying to change the world and “portray Iraq as it happened and not wait until afterwards and make a history painting”.

In 2013 He expanded his methods of dissemination by sharing images through online platforms such as Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.
The guest for this episode is Russell Shaw Higgs. Russell was born in Oswestry Army Camp. Based predominantly in London, Russell has a long history as being an artist but also a political activist. In the late 80’s he was engaged as a frontline civil disobedience activist with campaigns such as ACT-UP and Outrage. Act up was a political group working together to end the AIDS pandemic, and continues to work on medication, treatment, legislation and public policies. He was a frontline Civil Disobedience activist and chaired the inaugural meetings of queer activist group Outrage in 1990 which was set up to advocate that gay, lesbian and bi-sexual people have the same rights as heterosexual people and to end Homophobia.

In the early 90’s Russell moved into Contemporary Dance which included performances at the ICA, with his contemporary dance group 2MEN and with Manact at Londons Place Theatre. In 2010 his improvised self portrait video compilation was shortlisted for a Guggenheim and Youtube prize and projected outside the museum in New York. Since 2013 he has focused more on the streets, pasting up works and engaging in the world of street art and graffiti. Russel is also very much engaged within the world of British Politics, and for the elections in 2015 and 2017 he stood as an independent candidate for Hackney South and Shoreditch.

In this episode, Matthew is also joined by Jasmine Walsh a student at Morley College London, Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries.

Hoxxoh attempts to show us a different way of viewing time through a means of exploring its natural fabric. His work creates a new foundation and approach to evaluating and appreciating time. The oscillation of the pendulum paints time through gravity’s natural pull. Expressing how we can be pulled in one direction, when we are really meant to be going in another. How resistance creates a struggle and a false sense of control. Where if we follow the natural flow of times predetermined, yet unseen path, an experience of beauty and pure form will take shape.
