Since 2022, the number of films and TV shows made in the U.S. has dropped by about 40%. Lú Festival of Light Drogheda will run over two long weekends, and will shine a light on the myths and legends from our shared mythological past.  

Drogheda, gateway to the Boyne Valley was one of the first settlements in Ireland’s Ancient East and is home to many of Ireland’s ancient tales.  The festival will focus on telling the stories of 5 of Ireland’s mythological heroes and heroines that have been passed down through the generations.

An amazing display of urban animation, Lú Festival of Light, Drogheda is free to attend and will run over two long weekends, 25th to 28th of October and 31st October to 3rd of November.

 Jack designed and built the Oculus DK1 and DK2 virtual reality headsets, prior to the acquisition of the company in 2014 by Facebook for $2 billion. He holds numerous U.S. patents for inventions in software, audio effects, virtual reality, motion control, computer peripherals, and video game hardware and controllers. Jack was awarded a full scholarship to attend University of California, Berkeley where he earned a BSc., EECS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1986. He currently serves as an Innovator in Residence at Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at UC Berkeley.

In higher education, there is a growing trend towards using technology in classroom spaces, with many universities and colleges investing in direct view LED displays. However, there are issues with energy use and eye strain, as many of these displays are too bright, causing discomfort to students and professors alike. Choosing the right screen size and type is also crucial, followed by selecting the appropriate ALR screen for the location, using DISCAS standards.

In the future, architects will need to learn how to deliver technology-enabled spaces, which require different-shaped and sized rooms, leading to changes in actual building structures. When working with existing spaces, it is essential to establish a hierarchy of needs and prioritise what is important, even if it means some metrics might be compromised.

Standards play a crucial role in the AV tech industry. Although they can be intimidating, using standards can help manage equipment, identify essential items to spend the budget on, and keep the campus functioning. In the pro AV market, standards apply mostly to applications like higher ed, corporate, and government. While the industry has content and best practices for live events and other applications, digital signage and trade associations have a separate universe and specific standards.

Screen capturing on Windows can be done using the built-in Snipping Tool or the Snip & Sketch app, or by using keyboard shortcuts. Here are the steps for each method:

Using Snipping Tool:

1. Open the Snipping Tool by typing "snipping tool" into the search bar or by finding it in the Windows Accessories folder in the Start menu.
2. Click "New" in the Snipping Tool window.
3. Click and drag your mouse over the area of the screen you want to capture.
4. Once you have selected the area, release the mouse button.
5. The captured image will appear in the Snipping Tool window.
6. Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the screenshot as an image file.

Using Snip & Sketch:

1. Open the Snip & Sketch app by typing "snip & sketch" into the search bar or by finding it in the Start menu.
2. Click "New" in the Snip & Sketch window.
3. Click and drag your mouse over the area of the screen you want to capture.
4. Once you have selected the area, release the mouse button.
5. The captured image will appear in the Snip & Sketch window.

Using keyboard shortcuts:

3. The captured image will be copied to the clipboard.
4. Open an image editing program, such as Paint or Photoshop.
5. Press "Ctrl + V" to paste the screenshot into the program.
6. Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the screenshot as an image file.

Screen capturing on a Mac can be done using the built-in Screenshot app or by using keyboard shortcuts. Here are the steps for each method:

Using Screenshot app:

1. Press Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard to open the Screenshot app.
2. Choose the type of screenshot you want to take from the options provided, such as capturing the entire screen, a selected portion of the screen, or a specific window.
3. After selecting the type of screenshot, adjust any additional settings as desired, such as the save location, timer, or whether to show the mouse pointer in the screenshot.
4. Click the "Capture" button to take the screenshot.
5. The captured image will appear as a thumbnail in the lower-right corner of the screen.
6. Click the thumbnail to open the screenshot and make any necessary edits or annotations.
7. To save the screenshot, click "File" and then "Save" in the menu bar.

Using keyboard shortcuts:

1. To capture the entire screen, press Command + Shift + 3 on your keyboard.
2. To capture a selected portion of the screen, press Command + Shift + 4, and then drag your mouse over the area you want to capture.
3. To capture a specific window, press Command + Shift + 4, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera icon, and you can click on the window you want to capture.

Using third-party screen recording software:

1. Download and install a screen recording software, such as OBS Studio, Bandicam, or Camtasia.
2. Open the software and choose the screen recording option.
3. Configure the recording settings as desired, such as the video quality, recording format, and audio options.
4. Start the recording by clicking the "Record" button or pressing the assigned hotkey.
5. To stop the recording, click the "Stop" button in the software or press the assigned hotkey.
6. The video will be saved to the specified location in the chosen format.

With a number of media courses available in educational institutions across Ireland, the new programme will provide graduates, or those expecting to graduate this year, with a chance to learn the “Real World” crafts of broadcast and audio-visual technical operations, and as part of
their training they will have the chance to rotate through various departments, learning on-the-job on some of the most high-profile and exciting events in the events calendar.

Creative Technology Ireland, (CT), specialises in Live Events technical production and audio-visual systems installation- everything from a large screed LED display for a sports stadium, to virtual studio facilities for corporate events, and its clients include broadcasters such as RTE and
Virgin Media, as well as many of the largest corporate campus facilities in the country.

NEP Ireland specialises in the provision of Television Outside Broadcast services, including many of the world’s largest sporting events, television shows, and public events, with a large fleet out outside broadcast vehicles, satellite and links facilities, and includes SSVFX, the film special
effects company responsible for many of the digital effects seen in leading TV and film productions.

The programme will run for two years, and during this time, trainees will learn a variety of crafts including vision and audio operations, technical maintenance, rigging, and associated skills. The trainees will be on full-time, paid contracts during their training, and will be expected to successfully complete a number of industry certification courses during their term with bodies such as Avixa (www.avixa.com) the global Audio-Visual educational organisation, and NEP-U, NEP group’s own worldwide University Programme.

Those successfully completing the programme will be offered full-time positions in either CT Ireland or NEP Ireland. It is intended to make this new innovation an annual programme to develop new talent to help the growth of the two companies.

Kevin was a Director of Creative Technology Ireland (CT Ireland), the Irish division of the international Creative Technology group up until retirement at the end of 2020. CT Ireland was formerly Ion Solutions, and is Ireland's premier supplier of broadcast and professional AV systems, live events technical production services, and provision of managed services, and employs a total of 70+ people in the group.

Among other achievements, Kevin was a key part of the team that was awarded an IBC Innovation Award at the 2013 IBC Convention, with our client, RTE and technology partner TMD, for the FAST Project at RTE, to provide file-based ingest and transmission facilities for the Irish National Broadcaster.

Kevin played a key role in determining the technology deployed by the CT-I team, and as well as his technical experience, Kevin has many years of financial and operational management experience.

However, there are new difficulties too. Identifying specific types of workers in customer businesses was simple in a rigid workplace with set environments, but the hybrid working revolution has made these personas more fluid. Rather than looking at traditional personas, businesses - and particularly channel businesses - need to help customers have conversations that allow them to identify not just where they work, but also to address the specific challenges that are unique to each individual.

Plans for ISE in 2021 is for Barcelona to host this massive AV show. However COVID-19 has had a massive effect on the industry and has cancelled many trade shows and made them go virtual. CES in 2021 will be an all virtual trade show for the first time. So where does this leave ISE 2021 in Barcelona? Will the event still take place?

After being destroyed by the Japanese Artist, MoMo received worldwide attention. The original sculpture, called Mother Bird, shows a human-style head with long dark hair spread sparsely over the creature's forehead, enormous round eyes, an over sized mouth and a flattened nose. The naked creature has the feet of a bird and not much of a torso. It was built in 2016 and displayed at Vanilla Gallery in Tokyo. 

The Momo challenge was an online game, shared on messaging services like WhatsApp, that tried to convince young children to commit violence or even suicide.

It made headlines  for allegedly causing the death of a 12-year-old girl in Argentina. While it has been refuted by various police agencies worldwide due to lack of evidence, the hysteria surrounding the Momo challenge grew, sparking other iterations of the challenge.

With the viral news controversary MoMo caused, just how bad is it for children to be connected to the online world via games consoles, smartphones, tablets, mobile phones and PC?

Or even a more worrying question do parents know what they're children are doing online, what games they are playing even on their games console who they are communicating with?

Justin Dawson interviewed  Cliona Curley from Cybersafe Ireland and asked how to protect minors from abuse online.

In this episode, Justin & Simon attend the 146 AES International Convention in the CCD Dublin. 

Dublin was the 2019 destination for Europe’s preeminent professional audio education and networking event. If your interests include Studio Recording, Live Sound, Networked Audio, Broadcast & Streaming, Music Production, Post Production, Game Audio, Spatial Sound, Audio for AR/VR/XR and Product Development, AES Dublin was the place to be!

The Audio Engineering Society is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research.

The Audio Engineering Society’s 146th International Pro Audio Convention in Dublin, Ireland drew to a close on March 23, wrapping up four days of audio science and education that drew attendees from 47 countries to Europe’s premier annual professional audio event. “It was a pleasure to bring the AES convention to Dublin for the very first time,” commented Convention Co-Chair and Dublin resident Enda Bates, “and an excellent way to kick off the formation of the new AES Ireland regional section in style. It was also great to see a more diverse range of presenters and topics, something which was specifically highlighted by many attendees as a welcome development.” 

 The Convention content was packed with options, notes Co-Chair Ben Kok, with 200 individual Workshops, Tutorials, Paper and Poster presentations and Special Events held in parallel across the four days of AES Dublin in seven auditoriums in the Dublin Convention Centre. Hosting top minds in audio from around the world, this year’s convention featured the AES Heyser Memorial lecture “Learning to Listen” by industry innovator and digital reverb pioneer David Griesinger and the keynote address – arranged by AES Dublin’s third co-chair, Mariana Lopez – “Inclusive Sonic Interactions” presented by Aalborg University Copenhagen Professor Stefania Serafin. 

 “For topics like cathedral acoustics and spatial electroacoustic music and education, there was a link between the technical program, off-site and special events,” Kok elaborates, “Overall, immersive/3D sound and spatial audio had a strong presence at the convention, covering both sonic capture as well as reproduction through loudspeakers or headphones.”

 Playing a key role in the Convention’s immersive content, Co-Chair Lopez was actively involved in the program including having the “true honor” of chairing the panel “The Present and Future of Audio for Film and Television,” which brought together industry notables Howard Bargroff, Anna Bertmark, Emma Butt and Fiona Cruickshank. 

 The immersive audio emphasis was continued into AES Dublin’s innovative hands-on sessions, part of the Convention’s dedicated student programing including the bustling Education and Career fair and the student recording and design competitions. Student attendance was typically strong for AES Dublin, a harbinger of future Society leadership as evidenced by former Student Members who attended AES Dublin as professional Members and participated in paper presentations and workshops, along with AES Dublin planning.

 The theme of diversity and inclusion was brought to the forefront of the Convention with Co-Chair Lopez’s AES Dublin Opening Ceremonies challenge for support and participation of the Society’s initiatives, and in the AES Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s Town Hall dialog, which she moderated. Questions about how the Society moves forward towards equality, noted Lopez, “are ultimately about who we are, and who we hope to be.” 

 As AES Dublin concluded, the site selection of Vienna, Austria, was announced for AES Europe in 2020 (May 25 – 28). Next on the AES Convention calendar is the upcoming AES New York International Pro Audio Convention (October 16 – 19, 2019)
