I Promised You Sora. You Got a Bonfire.

Last episode I told you Episode 4 was all Sora. Then I read a book and it wrecked me, and pretending otherwise would have been the exact amateur move this whole episode is about.

So Sora is coming. But first we have to deal with the thing standing between me and every episode I haven't recorded yet.

The Book That Got Me

I've read **The War of Art** three times. First time I thought it was stupid. Second and third time, some things started landing.

But I wasn't looking for inspiration. I went to Gemini and asked for a book that would help me click this whole creative business into place. It said: read **Turning Pro**.

It was right. It's short. And one idea in it hit me like a brick:

**The difference between an amateur and a professional is fear.**

The amateur is afraid, so the amateur builds a full life of distractions. Shadow versions of the real thing. Pressfield calls it a **shadow career** ... doing something adjacent to your calling so you never have to risk the calling itself.

The shadow is safe. The real thing is terrifying.

Confession: I Am the Shadow King

I have a day job I've worked for twenty years. I clock in. I don't miss days. If I _have_ to miss, I call a manager, I put things in place so nothing breaks while I'm gone, and I know I'll have cleanup waiting when I get back.

That's professional behavior. That's how I treat a job I didn't even choose.

Now here's how I've been treating my creative business: not like that. At all.

Instead I built **systems**. Beautiful ones. Personas. Frameworks. A whole conceptual journaling architecture I named **GhostWare** ... which was me trying to turn analysis paralysis into art.

And honestly? It kind of worked. But then it became the shadow. Because I never took the next step.

**The work is shipping.** The work is this episode. The work is a painting. I've been polishing the scaffolding and calling it the cathedral.

Then Austin Kleon Walks In

There's another voice in my head. Austin Kleon — the writer who draws. His whole permission slip is: be messy, be imperfect, you have limited time, just make the thing.

On the surface that sounds like the opposite of Pressfield. Pressfield is discipline, show up, turn pro. Kleon is looseness, give yourself grace.

They're not fighting. They're saying the same thing from two sides:

**Turning pro doesn't mean turning polished. Turning pro means turning present.**

The amateur waits for perfect. The pro ships messy and shows up again tomorrow.

This episode is me being messy on purpose. I'm an **art caster** — an artist and a broadcaster — giving myself permission to be raw. That's not the amateur move. That's the pro move.

The Whole Book in One Sentence

Here's where I landed, and it's simpler than I expected.

Turning pro isn't about money. It isn't about quitting your job. It isn't even about being good.

**It's about who you report to.**

The amateur reports to his feelings. The professional reports to the work.

That's it. That's the whole book. You stop asking the work to make you feel ready, and you go do it — the same way I walk into my day job every single day without checking whether I'm in the mood.

The Fire Pit Initiation

My friend **Dave MacDowell** is a Southern California lowbrow artist and a total visual maniac. He told me this story once.

When his painter friends get together and a new guy joins the circle, they tell him to bring one of his favorite paintings. Everybody hangs out in the backyard, fire pit going, drinks going, whatever else going. And then they turn to the new guy:

_This is your initiation. Throw your painting in the fire._

Dave had to do it. He said it was terrible. He also said that's when you become a real artist.

I said, "Damn. I don't think I'm coming over."

But he's right. **Burning your best painting IS turning professional.** Same exact mechanism.

The amateur clings to his one good piece. He frames it, protects it, shows it to people — because deep down he's afraid it's the only good thing he'll ever make.

The pro can throw it in the fire, because the pro knows the painting was never the point. The work is the point. He trusts another one is coming, and another, and another, because he shows up every day to make them.

You're not burning your talent. You're burning your **preciousness**.

Why AI Is Even In This Episode

I graduated with a BFA in painting and printmaking a very long time ago. The art thing never worked out on paper — but I never stopped being a conceptual artist and a massive daydreamer.

Then AI showed up and gave me a second brain.

I have autism and ADHD. I need a decoder and an enhancer. AI is a prosthetic. It's the jetpack we were promised. I'd say cyborg, but honestly I'm more **Deathlok** from Marvel Comics. (If you don't know what that is — don't Google it. Ask your AI. We don't Google anymore.)

The reason I'm recording again after wanting to do this for years is AI. That's not a sponsorship read. That's just the truth.

**2. Go burn your painting.** Or your flag. Not your state flag — although, Alabama, come on. I mean whatever flag you've been standing under instead of making things.

Artists don't stand under flags. **We design them.** We invented the flags. Plant a new one.

Yes, the guys running these AI companies are shady. Wealthy people are always shady. That's not new information and it's not a reason to sit out the biggest shift in image-making since the camera.

**AI is the new canvas.** Crawl out of the cave. We're not doing cave paintings anymore.
