6th Grade Podcasts: The Refugee Crisis Project

What does it mean to be forced to leave your home? Our 6th graders spent their final Fishtank ELA unit exploring this question through history, examining crises from Nazi Germany, Cuba, and Syria by reading Refugee by Alan Gratz, The Unwanted by Don Brown, and a variety of other powerful texts.

The unit explored the following key ideas:
-Why do people make the decision to flee their homes and seek refuge elsewhere, and what are they willing to sacrifice to find safety?
-How do people respond when they see others in need?
-How are individuals impacted by coming of age during times of crisis and war?

With 30 million refugees worldwide today, upon completion of the reading, students took on the roles of investigative reporters and global experts to shed light on crises happening right now. Through these student-produced podcasts, they aim to educate our community on critical global issues. Grab your headphones and listen to history through their eyes.

Students researched and wrote their podcast script, which was turned into the teacher, along with a link to the podcast and their bibliography. Please remember this is a student-created podcast, written, recorded, and edited by 6th graders.
